Park and Recreation Services are Essential

Voters Approve Five Park and Recreation Millages

The people of Michigan have spoken and they have said that quality Recreation and Park programs are a worthy investment of their tax dollars!  With the economic stresses that the average Michigan family is facing – a vote to spend money on public services of any type is a vote that has been made only after very careful consideration.  It is clear that voters value parks and recreation services in their communities.

Thanks to the committed professionals in Oakland County, St. Clair County, Saginaw County, Springfield Township and the City of Lansing, this primary election was a huge victory not only for their local communities but for the Recreation and Park profession.

Be sure that your elected officials are aware of the support and positive impact these quality departments are having in their communities and the loyalty that they enjoy from members of the public.  We are valued and we do matter.  Most of all, remember that elections are not won or lost within the course of an election cycle.  Every day of every year each person who works with you needs to ask, “What have I done to make someone vote to retain our department today?”  This is important whether you rely on a millage or not.  People support for you by being advocates of yours to decision makers and by sharing their enthusiasm for your services.

We know we are being deluged with demand – we are the alternative for families and seniors when their resources are limited.  We know that we enhance neighborhood stability, generate economic impact with our facilities, and create community through programs.  We know that we touch lives in a very personal and unforgettable way.  Now, we have proof that the people of  Michigan know all of this too and view Park and Recreation services as essential.

If there were other proposals not mentioned, please share your successes with the MRPA office so we can broadcast your results as well.  Congratulations to our outstanding departments and to all our members who don’t let budget cuts and bad times stop their dedication and commitment.  People care, people appreciate us and now we know that people are committed to retaining quality Park and Recreation services!
