MRPA advocates state and federal policies that support essential parks and recreation services. The Association's Public Policy Committee monitors legislation related to parks, tourism and recreation issues, suggests positions to the Board of Directors and keeps the membership informed.

Current Initiatives and Events

Join MRPA on Tuesday, June 19 in Lansing. A variety of activities are planned for Legislative Day participants - bring your day campers for kids activities on the lawn, participate in meetings with your senators and representatives, and much, much more. Join us as we show Michigan's legislative leaders what parks and recreation is all about. Additional details will be available soon.

MRPA supports the Michigan Municipal League's "Replace Don't Erase"
Personal Property Tax iniative.

Positions on Specific Legislation (2011-2012 Legislative Session)

A bill that would restrict government agencies from providing services that are provided by private enterprise. MRPA recognizes the concern regarding potential government competition with private business, however the Association is concerned the bill is overly broad and could lead to unintended consequences.  The MRPA Board opposes HB 4453.

A bill to amend the recreation authorities legislation to allow public school districts to be a full member of a local recreation authority. At this time, the MRPA Board has no formal position on SB 270.

A bill that will authorize a state-wide vote to amend the Michigan Constitution to make Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) revenues available for road construction and airport improvement projects. Strongly opposed to this legislation as it violates the original intent of the Trust Fund to reinvest revenues from non-renewable oil and gas under state lands for purchase and development of lands and facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy for generations to come.
HB 4021 is the 2011-2012  version of HB 6482 from the previous legislative session. The MRPA Board opposes HB 4021
