MRPA Scholarship Recipients Announced for 2009-2010 Academic Term
[Okemos, Mich.] — The Michigan Recreation and Park Association Scholarship Committee has announced the class of scholarship recipients for the 2009-2010 school year. Five outstanding Park and Recreation students from Central Michigan University, Lake Superior State University and Michigan State University were selected to receive the awards.
- Jamie Elliott, a graduate of Lake Superior State University, received the Jack Golden Award and the Becky McCann Scholarship to contribute towards the completion of her internship.
- Erin McCarty, a senior at Michigan State University, was awarded a general scholarship.
- Alex Pardy, a fifth-year undergraduate at Central Michigan University, received the Herb Jennings Award.
- Janelle Reava, a senior at Central Michigan University, received the Excellence Award.
- Ashley Stone, a fifth-year undergraduate student at Central Michigan University, received the Rob Nagle Award.
"The scholarships provide an avenue to recognize up-and-coming professionals for their scholastic achievements, as well as leadership and volunteerism," said committee chair Nancy Cowan. "Tuition costs are rising and the economy is struggling right now," she added. "Hopefully these scholarships will allow [the students] to focus on thgeir education, and will encourage them to stay within the Parks and Recreation curriculum."
Cowan and the Scholarship Committee selected the recipients based on their applications, essays and interviews conducted at MRPA Headquarters in Okemos. Each of the recipients are student members of the association and are pursuing degrees related to the Park and Recreation field.
