Walk Michigan/Walking Works State Kickoff!

Michigan State CapitolThe Walk Michigan State Kickoff will be held at the State Capitol in Downtown Lansing on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 12:00 p.m.

The State Kickoff will be the official start of a state wide campaign administered by Michigan Recreation and Park Association (MRPA) and supported by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) in which parks and recreation facilities across Michigan will be teamed up with businesses and corporations to promote walking and healthy lifestyle options to employees and their families.  BCBSM and MRPA are celebrating an innovative partnership that promotes walking as a viable way to get Michigan residents healthy and fit.  This effort combines BCBSM’s Walking Works with MRPA’s Walk Michigan program.  The goal of this partnership is educate the public about the benefits of walking, and to increase participation in walking programs throughout the state.

The BCBSM and MRPA partnership is the inspiration for the scheduled kick off on the lawn of the State Capitol.  There will be a special guest appearance by Mr. Ernie Harwell, former Detroit Tigers announcer and National Radio Hall of Famer.  Ernie is an avid walker and the spokesperson for BCBSM’s Walking Works program.   Dean Transportation will be providing buses for all the students at Gier Elementary School to attend the event.

Trips for Two to Mackinac Island
Participating communities will have a chance to win a trip for two to participate in Michigan’s famous Labor Day Bridge Walk and visit beautiful and historic Mackinac Island!  Last year more than 175 walkers, guests, and volunteers enjoyed the trip.  Many participating communities also offer additional prizes.  As a participating agency, you will also have a first-chance opportunity to purchase the Mackinac Island Labor Day weekend package participant give-away.  This exciting travel package, which consists of a four days/three nights stay at the Mission Point Resort on Michigan’s stunning and historic Mackinac Island, can be an outstanding incentive for encouraging walker participation in your scheduled Walk Michigan/Walking Works! events.  You may wish to offer this luxury travel package as a Grand Prize to walkers in your Walk Michigan/Walking Works! programs.  Communities that do not purchase this special package may pass the opportunity to purchase a trip directly on to walkers.  Trip packages are available to all walkers, so everyone’s a fitness winner in Walk Michigan/Walking Works!
